nissan_patrolMotor manufacturers have always looked for opportunities to incorporate items of technology that improve the motoring experience -- be it in ride comfort, safety, or "nice to have" gadgets.

The fact that people want more light, is evident in the high number of cars driving with high wattage Halogen lights (100W and even 130W). Whilst we say this, it must be noted that driving with Halogen bulbs higher than 55/60W is illegal in most countries in the world, including South Africa. Xenon lights provide better overall lighting then normal Halogen, with several other bonuses: the superior light spread, penetration and luminance of Xenon lights provides a much safer night ride and reduces driver fatigue, and the system runs cooler (temp) and draws less power from your alternator. Lifespan can be up to 10x longer than Halogen. Xenon HID bulbs do not have filaments like Halogen bulbs. Instead, the light is created by a high voltage electrical discharge between two electrodes in an air tight quartz capsule. This capsule is filled with amongst others: Xenon gas, Mercury and Metal Halide particles.

Because the Xenon bulb does not have a filament, it is considered more reliable than Halogen bulbs. A Halogen bulb's constant heating-up and cooling down, makes the filament brittle (causes frequent bulb failure in off-road conditions due to extreme vibration).

A shockingly high percentage of all night-time accidents are caused by poor vision. It is a scientific fact that a person of around 40+ years of age, needs 10x more light to see with the same clarity as a 20 year old. Installing HID Xenon lights in your car will address this problem. HID lights are proven to reduce night-time driver fatigue. Needless to say, this improves safety, since the driver is more alert over longer distances. Improved safety is also evident in the fact that better light provides better visibility at night (road markings, warning sings, bad weather conditions etc). This becomes more important for older persons, since older drivers need up to 10x more light then younger drivers to see properly. The actual light output of HID is almost 2 to 3 times that of a normal 55/60W Halogen bulb. Additionally, HID light produces a more "even' light pattern and has almost double the luminance compared to Halogen. Of a pure technical advantage is the fact that the HID system actually runs cooler (heat/temperature) than Halogen, and the power draw from the alternator is reduced by 40% - ideal for those who like to use extra spotlights or fridges on their vehicles. In off-road use, the superior contrast and light intensity of HID/Xenon lights is much superior to normal Halogen lighting. Also, the HID bulb is not as sensitive to the vibrations of the vehicle - which means less bulb failure. Most rally drivers use a full complement of Xenon lights nowadays, complemented by HID Xenon spotlights.
